It's sad to me because he had a lot greater impact on me than I had on him. And he led by example on the field. He was the complete player. He did everything. He was the greatest runner, but he was also probably the best blocking back you ever saw." (AP)

Independent Fundraisers

The Walter Payton Cancer Fund enjoys great dedication by Payton fans and cancer advocates alike. People across the country are thinking creatively to build awareness and to raise money for innovative cancer research programs.

Planning an independent fundraiser can be easy, fun, and a great way to connect with your community.

The first step to set a goal.

  • Do you want to raise $100? Ask four friends for $5. Ask four family members for $10. Ask four people at work for $5. Ask a Packer fan for the remaining $20.

  • Do you want to sell Walter’s career rushing record of 9.5 miles? Ask one person to "buy" each mile from you. Do the miles cost $10 each? Are miles only available on a limited basis, therefore sold only to the highest offers?

  • Do you want your relay team to compete? Which team member can rally the most support from family and friends? Who gets bragging rights for the fastest leg of the relay? The most donations? The highest donation? Who is the REAL Walter Payton fan?

The second step is to tell others about your goal.

  • Share your motivation. Let family and friends know how they can help. Express yourself - be creative!

  • Spread the word - ask them to pass your email to other Walter Payton fans, Bears fans, or to someone who has been touched by cancer.

The third step is to call friends and family to action!

  • Participate - ask them to join you at the Run. Raise a challenge to the individual or team that raises the most money!

  • Donate - if someone cannot be with you race day, secure credit card transactions can support your efforts or those of your team.

Raise more money with less effort!
