Payton finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting in 1974.

Walter was a first-round draft pick by the Chicago Bears in 1975, played 13 seasons and was named to the Pro Bowl nine times. By the time he finished his professional career, Payton was the NFL's all-time leading rusher with 16,726 yards.
